The Women's Welsh Premier League was founded in 2009, contested between eight teams, divided into two conferences - four teams from North Wales and four from South Wales. The Conference winners then meet at a neutral venue to decide who is crowned Women's Champion of Wales, and the right to represent Wales in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

The first ever match to take place in the league was contested at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue Stadium on 24th September 2009. In front of 367 supporters, the home side defeated much fancied Llanidloes Town Ladies 2-0.

Swansea City were the first ever champions, defeating Caernarfon Town in the final 4-0 in Haverfordwest. Twelve months later the two sides met again, this time in Llanidloes, and the Swans were again victorious by three goals to one.
