The Laithwaite Shield Final between Premier team Standish St Wilfs and Division Two giant killers Leigh Legion was an excellent affair but despite trailing early in the contest it was Standish who took the spoils 3-1. The early exchanges were pretty even and then on 21 minutes Legion drew first blood when Jamie Hardman fired in an unstoppable shot from 20 yards a fantastic goal. Standish struck back and minutes later it was all square as Duncan McPhail netted from close range. Half time arrived with honours and scores even.
The second half was only three minutes old when tragedy struck Legion with a bizarre goal to that man McPhail. A free kick some thirty yards out moved slowly towards goal and was then allowed to roll over the line by Legion's keeper a real howler. Legion hit back and a truly magnificent 75 yard run by James Dooley should have produced a goal but his shot was blasted over. As time ran out Legion poured forward to look for the elusive equaliser but sadly it was Standish who clinched the old shield when Johann Du Toit headed in from a corner. Johann Du Toit son of ex Wigan Warriors favourite Nicky was named Man of the Match and received the Bob Valentine Memorial Trophy for a superb personal performance.
Farnworth Town met Billinge in the Northern Cup Final at South Liverpool but it was a bad day at the office for Town who went down 3-0. The first half saw Town turn in their worst display of the season allowing their opponents too much room. They were punished on 17 minutes when Ash Kirkman's mistake allowed Michael Jukes to put Billinge in front. Town could have conceded more goals but poor finishing by the Billinge forwards and great goalkeeping from Paul Bentley kept the score at 1-0.
Town brightened up in the second half taking the match to their opponents. Joe Morton fired over from a god position and then Ian Teasdale did likewise as Farnworth dominated the game. Morton then struck a superb 35yard free kick which keeper Neil Adair scrambled away. Town really had their tails up and were looking like possible winners until against the run of play Billinge's Pete Mather fired home to make it 2-0. Morton who had a blinder and Teasdale both went close in the dying minutes but deep into injury time the luckless Kieran Ward put through his own goal to put the top hat bon a bad day!
