On the 31st of December 2009 DAVID WATSON, was fatally injured as a result of the injuries he suffered during his work on Bomb Disposa. David played for me and for Rob Buckton at Whickham Fellside from U11 to U17 and, together with his friends and team mates, played a part in establishing the Club that we have today; his contribution helped us to create a base that has made us the group we are now. He was a very tall, gentle young man, who I had the privilege to Coach and get to know over eight great years; David went to school with my daughter and the majority of the lads who formed this group of players at Whickham Fellside YTC from 1996 to 2004 were his closest friends. We as a Club and a community are devastated that such a lovely young person should be taken from us and our Club has offered sincere condolences to his family and friends. David's funeral will take place on Tuesday the 19th of January at St. Mary's Church in Whickham at 12 noon; the occasion will be with full Military Honours. After speaking with his devastated parents, we intend to remember David in some poignant way within our Club and this will probably be in an award, given yearly, to an individual who shows the same spirit, enthusiasm, zest for life, respect and courage that David showed. As David played his all his youth football in the Russell Foster Youth League, I thought it only right to contact you, perhaps you may put something suitable on the League Website, I attach a photograph of David as well. The funeral will be a very sad occasion, his military colleagues will form the bearer party and full honours will be given to this remarkable young man, who gave the supreme sacrifice. My very best wishes BILL BATY Chairman, Whickham Fellside Youth Football Club
