997’s vs. Motherwell Pro youth
1997’s Match report

On a freezing night at the Bent, LFDA 97s continued with only their second match with an impressive 1-1 draw against Motherwell Pro Youth 97s. It was Motherwell who started strongly and kept LFDA pinned back in their own half for much of the first 25 minute period, although our defence played very well in restricting Motherwell to very few chances and our midfield worked tirelessly. In this period, LFDA came closest from a Dylan Bradley (Calderbraes) free-kick which the keeper did well to hold.
In the second period of 25 minutes, the balance of play was changing as we began to retain possession and some slick and composed passing movements were causing Motherwell more problems. After 5 minutes it was LFDA who took the lead as the ball finally went wide to Niall Rooney of South Lanark who took on the shot from 25 yards which flew high over the keeper into the Motherwell net for a great goal. The game was going end to end with good football from both teams and just before the end of the second period it was Motherwell who broke away and a mistimed tackle brought down the Motherwell striker in the box and 'Well got their deserved equaliser from the penalty spot.
The third period was pretty even and Motherwell created chances in the early part with both LFDA keepers performing heroics to keep a determined Motherwell out. However it was LFDA who nearly won the match after some sustained pressure, when in the last two minutes as a great corner fell to Mark Newton of Holytown who shot and was very unlucky as it went narrowly past the post with the keeper beaten.
After 75 minutes it was 1-1 and great performances from ALL the boys who never stopped chasing and were rewarded for their hard work. Darren Roberts of Newmains Hammers and Matthew Creechan of Mill Utd were both excellent in goals and outstanding performances from Andrew Clement and Euan Gordon, both of Mill Utd, in the centre of defence were at the heart of this result. In Midfield, we rotated a lot and all the players adapted well to the frequent changes with John Woodhouse of Strathaven, Liam McGuigan of Newmains and Conner Shaw of Quarter at the heart of much of the midfield passing play. As the game developed, our midfielders were linking well with the rotated lone strikers of Dylan Bradley of Calderbraes and Stefan Law of Strathaven who chased tirelessly to great effect and their hold up play was a big factor in strong link-up with midfield.
Overall, much for Coach John Newton to be pleased about especially against such a strong team as Motherwell. As usual the game was played in great spirits by both teams and we are grateful to Motherwell for bringing their boys over for an excellent work-out for both teams.
