Keltec 5 A Side Football Leagues were formed in 2011/12 as a result of the Mayflower Centre closing and the League folding after some 35 years operating across 2 sites the Mayflower Centre and Higher Home Park. Over time the league reduced from 7 nights a weeks to when the Mayflower Centre closed with just 2 nights. The committee decided that after careful consideration and the uncertainty of the Life Centre being able to accommadate a league of this size albeit a smaller league, the members which included Mrs Iris Hitt and Mr Les Wells decided to resign. This left me in a difficult position as I knew many teams were happy to continue to play competitive football but with the uncertainty of the Life centre and the allocation of time slots as Devon Football Association decided in their wisdom not to support the traditional 5 a side game. Instead they put their effort's in the direction of Futsal, which left me with a problem, should we continue or except that 5 a side was not going to take place as a competitive league.
The decision was taken to work with the Life Centre operators Everyone Active and see whether we could put together a league, this was acheived in late 2012 and currently the league operates only on Thursday's between 8-10pm and also the new Derriford Leisure Centre at Derriford Hospital ( 5 s side League ) which operates on Wednesday's between 6.45 - 9.15, the league is now well supported and we are hoping to extend further into 2013/14.
