Bolton Arena Leagues
The very first five-a-side leagues were formed September 2004. A league of eight teams on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Sunday got the ball rolling from which teams such as F.C. Real, Reality, Team Dave, Real Ale Madrid, The Richards, The Legion, Deane Utd, B & M Bolton, Athletico Artois & Chorley Ladies five years on still play their football at the Arena. Twelve months on & the number of leagues rose to twelve & with it the Football 5’s as it was known changed its name to a more obvious but catchy, Arena 5’s.
The structure of the leagues was based upon the tried & tested systems/format as previously used by our Football Manager at two hugely successful centres. The emphasis & priority was to focus on meticulous organisation, high standards of discipline as well as knowledgeable & experienced Referees. (Although some players may argue the latter!!)
In addition to this the Arena boasted four brand new 3rd Generation five-a-side pitches which were an instant hit when compared to nearby competitors. The surface looked liked grass, felt like grass & even played like grass so as eighteen months had passed the number of leagues had rose to sixteen & Arena 5’s had now firmly cemented itself on the map as a leading provider in the hugely competitive small-sided market.
With the immediate local area covered Arena 5’s began to attract teams from up to as much as a 20 minute drive away as word of mouth began to take effect. The main talking points seemed to be our reputation for no-nonsense when up against rule breakers, our professionalism & organisation.
Three years on & with the Fives operation complete, work began on resurfacing our Multi Use Games Area (M.U.G.A.) along with demolishing the outdoor basketball court area & replacing it with the jewel in the crown, a purpose built seven-a-side pitch. Measuring in at 40 msq this pitch signaled the birth of Arena 7’s leagues which was closely followed by the popular Sunday afternoon Arena 6’s league.
Five years on 2009, the Arena leagues now operate at full capacity, boasting twenty one leagues, 200+ teams, 3,000 league players & now recognized as being the number one provider of varied small-sided leagues in the Northwest.
