Ray joined Pleasington C & A C F.C. (now known as Feniscowles and Pleasington F.C.) in 1956 and has served the club in several roles ever since. He became Secretary of the Club in 1970, a role Ray still fulfills to the present day.

He joined the Blackburn Combination Management Committee in 1997 and became President in 2005. Ray also became a member of the Combination General Purposes Committee in 1998 and became the G.P. Committee Chairman in 2008.

Ray was the Blackburn Combination Secretary of the Year in 1993 and was the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award in 1998.

In 2009 Ray was presented with the Blackburn Sports Council Special Award for Services to Local Sport and a Lancashire Football Association 30 Year Long Service Award. At the Combination A.G.M. he was also presented with an award for completing Ten Years Service on the Combination Management Committee.
