Aldershot and District Sunday Football League
You all know that as part of completing the result card you have to mark the referee’s performance out of 100 points. These scores are added together and help in assessing and developing referees. It is important that we get these marks from you.
You will also be aware that if the referee’s performance is not up to scratch you are required to write and explain why you think his game was below par. We ask you to do that if the referee’s score you give is 50 points or below.
A number of clubs who are unhappy with the referee’s performance but who don’t want to write to the League (far be it from me to suggest that they can’t be bothered!) will give the referee the lowest mark they can – 51. Unfortunately this doesn’t help anyone. If there is a problem with the standard of refereeing then it’s best we know about it. A mark of 51 tells us nothing. Think of the problem areas, for example; did he control the game, was he well positioned to make critical decisions, did he apply advantage, did he use the assistants effectively, did he communicate with players, was the referee quick thinking? All too often low marks are given simply because a team lost or had a player cautioned or sent off and a low mark is seen as a way of getting back at a referee.
We need to know what the real problems are so that the referee can develop in those areas where you fell he was weak. If you feel that a referee had a bad game please tell us. It is much more helpful to us, to the referee and ultimately to you and your team if you were to give a score of 49 and write an explanation rather than simply give a mark of 51.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out a disgruntled club – we just look at the mark given by the other team, if that is a high mark then the chances are that the referee didn’t have a bad game but just upset one team.
In future where a low mark is received from only one team we will be asking that team to explain this, either in writing or at a League Management Committee meeting.
Page 47 of the League handbook explains how to mark a referee’s performance. Please take the time to read this section.
I’d appreciate your help with this, I believe it will lead to better standards overall.
Please send only your result cards to adslresults@hotmail.co.uk. This address is not for general correspondence, please use sunday.league@ntlworld.com for that.
Just a reminder that result cards must be received by Thursday following the game. Cards for all games; league, league cup, Hants & Aldershot cups must be sent. You can also post to your Divisional Representative, details are in the hand book.
